The Geoinformation Group within the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation (IGG) at the University of Bonn is offering a fulltime and fully funded

PhD position (f/m/d)

for three years in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG. The position is funded until 07/2027 from the project FAIRagro (https://fairagro.net/en/) and afterwards from state funds.

FAIRagro is a collaborative project in which multiple research institutions in Germany jointly develop a data infrastructure for the agrosystem science domain. The successful candidate will contribute to the working area “Data Quality Annotation, Curation and Feedback/Review” of FAIRagro by developing innovative algorithmic methods for automatically assessing and visualizing the quality of geospatial data, such as multi-temporal data on land use and land cover. FAIRagro is a partner project of the Cluster of Excellence “PhenoRob: Robotics and Phenotyping for Sustainable Crop Production” (http://www.phenorob.de/), which will provide an open, supportive, and stimulating work environment for the PhD candidate at the University of Bonn.

Your tasks:

  • Designing, implementing, and testing of novel methods of algorithmic data analytics and information visualization, to analyze and communicate the quality of geospatial datasets from the agrosystem science domain,
  • Publishing results in peer reviewed journals and presenting at conferences,
  • Cooperation with partners in FAIRagro and PhenoRob,
  • Starting from 08/2027, the position is assigned a teaching load of four semester hours per week.

Your profile:

  • An excellent MSc degree in geoinformatics, computer science, geodesy and geoinformation or related disciplines, preferably with a focus on the development of algorithms for the analysis of geospatial data,
  • Profound programming skills in at least one high-level programming language, e.g., Python, Java or C++,
  • Willingness to delve deeper into the applications of algorithmic data analytics in agrosystem science,
  • Experience with unsupervised machine learning tasks such as clustering and outlier detection is an advantage.
