The Ecological Modelling Research Group of the Bonner Institute for Organismal Biology (BIOB), Department I (Plant Biodiversity) at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is seeking to fill a permanent position as soon as possible.
Programmer in Ecological Modelling
(Full-time 100%)
Our team’s research focusses on mechanistic biodiversity modelling across spatiotemporal scales and levels of organisation (from individual to ecosystems, under natural and human-induced scenarios). We combine ecological and eco-evolutionary models with field work and data analyses to understand and predict biodiversity dynamics. To support our team, we seek a scientific programmer and modeller.
Your tasks:
- Maintenance, documentation, and further development of our mechanistic models,
- Runtime optimization, calibration and parameterisation, setting up simulation experiments, parallelization, support the use of HPC (High-Performance Computing), and output analysis,
- Promoting best practices in modelling and data management among group members,
- Support for analysis and processing of raw data (e.g., images or LiDAR).
Your profile:
- Skill and experience in scientific software programming, demonstrated through successful Bachelor and Master degrees in computer science, geoecology, biology, physics, mathematics, or similar disciplines,
- Strong experience and knowledge in programming mechanistic, individual-based and/or theoretical ecological as well as eco-evolutionary models,
- Experience with AI methods, parallel and high-performance computing, interactive software, and front-end development is advantageous,
- Experience in programming with multiple computer languages (e.g., R, Julia, Java, MATLAB, C++) and in parameterising models is desirable,
- Good communication skills and proficiency in English is necessary.
