The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled by 9/1/2025 and offered for a fixed term of 4 years.
An extension of up to 2 years is possible.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a part-time position (50 % of the standard weekly hours for full-time employees).
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.

Unser Profil

The teaching and research unit ‘Artistic Research’ at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University invites applications for a doctoral position (50%) starting 1 September 2025 for an initial period of four years, extendable to a maximum of six years. We are looking for innovative projects that combine artistic methods with architectural and spatial questions/themes.

The teaching and research unit ‘Artistic Research’ operates at the interface of art and architecture and is dedicated to a critical historiography of spaces from an applied practice. We emphasise integrative, transdisciplinary ideas and projects that incorporate the spatial and strategic knowledge of other disciplines and promote joint work on relevant and current issues of social change.

Ihr Profil

Your profile:

  • Outstanding academic qualifications and promising achievements in your field of study.
  • A promising dissertation project related to architecture and artistic methods.
  • University degree (Master's or equivalent) in a relevant field of study, e.g. art, architecture, transdisciplinarity, cultural analysis, critical studies, or related disciplines.

Your application should include the following:

  • a letter of motivation
  • an exposé of your research project (5-8 pages)
  • a detailed curriculum vitae
  • Portfolio with artistic/design work (max. 20 pages)
  • Copies of certificates and qualifications
  • Two references

Ihre Aufgaben

As a doctoral candidate you will:

  • Write and defend a dissertation.
  • Present your research findings at national and international scientific conferences.
  • Write and submit at least two peer-reviewed scientific articles or book chapters during the course of the project.
  • Participate in high-profile formats in the field of teaching and research (exhibitions, projects, etc.).
  • Work closely with the team of research assistants and doctoral candidates in the Artistic Methods teaching and research area.
  • Collaborate in the supervision and relaisation of courses (2 SWS).
  • Participate in the RWTH Doctoral Academy programme.
