Unser Profil

In times of climate crisis and increasing global tensions, a fundamental transformation of energy systems is necessary to ensure the security, environmental compatibility, and independence of the energy supply. The power grid plays a key role in this transformation by replacing fossil power plants and integrating renewable based generations, additional consumers, from industrial processes to heat pumps and electromobility. The most important prerequisites for safe and efficient operation of modern power system are innovative technologies, but above all the integration of modern ICT into the automation infrastructure to coordinate millions of decentralized generation plants and consumers. This revolution requires new concepts and approaches that do not come from a traditional research environment.

The goal of the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS) is to implement a multidisciplinary research approach capable of capturing and leveraging the latest advances in ICT to help solve the most advanced problems in grid dynamics and automation. Join us and create a climate-friendly and secure future energy system together with many national and international partners from industry and research!

Ihr Profil

A university degree (Masters`s degree or equivalent) in electrical engineering/power systems is a prerequisite for employment.

In addition, you should ideally have the following profile:

  • Interest in scientific work, with the aim of a doctorate
  • Enthusiasm for researching the latest technologies
  • Innovative and interdisciplinary thinking, independent and structured way of working
  • Experience in programming
  • Fluent English, preferably also fluent German
  • Social competence, communication and teamwork skills

Furthermore, interest or knowledge in at least one of the following areas is desirable:

  • Dynamics of electrical grids with a high proportion of renewable energies
  • State estimation of electrical grids
  • Interest in information technology and energy technology issues and motivation to mediate between the two disciplines

Ihre Aufgaben

The ongoing evolution of electricity grids into smarter, more decentralised and renewable energy-integrating systems presents both opportunities and challenges for the management and operation of these critical infrastructures. As electricity grids absorb a higher proportion of renewable energy such as wind and solar power and utilise advanced demand-side management and energy storage technologies, the dynamics and complexity of these systems are increasing significantly. This transformation is not only changing the energy landscape, but also requires significant advances in grid management techniques, particularly in state estimation, which is critical to maintaining grid stability and reliability.

Traditional methods of state estimation of electrical grids were developed for much more static environments and mostly for transmission grids, which is why there is a great need for research into modern methods of state estimation in the area of dynamic distribution grids.

Your tasks are to develop new methods and approaches for estimating the state of dynamic distribution grids with a high proportion of intermittent resources. Thanks to the integration of research as part of project work, you will have the opportunity to test the developments not only in a simulative environment, but also in the field with pilot partners. In a team with other scientists and industrial partners, your developments will be integrated into operational systems and
tested under real conditions.

Thanks to the reliable guidance of our professors, you will publish your new scientific findings in high-ranking specialist journals.
