Unser Profil

The Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems, headed by Prof. Dr Dirk Uwe Sauer, is part of the Institute for Power Electronics and Electric Drives (ISEA) within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at RWTH Aachen University. We are the largest university research group in Germany dedicated to the fundamentals of battery technology and its system integration into applications.

Our publications provide a good overview of the topics we focus on: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Dirk-Uwe-Sauer

Our objective is to further develop and improve the characterization, monitoring, and assessment of battery systems across a wide range of technologies.

This is carried out within a container-based testing and storage environment, where battery modules are operated, charged, discharged, and continuously monitored under realistic operating conditions. Existing testing and measurement infrastructures are integrated and extended, and corresponding systems are implemented into the overall architecture.

The resulting operational and measurement data are systematically analyzed and used for the development and validation of physics-based and data-driven models for battery state assessment and prediction.

With the “Centre for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems” (CARL), your working environment is currently taking shape on the Melaten campus as a state-of-the-art research facility. From mid-2022, this centre will link method-oriented, interdisciplinary cutting-edge research from the material level to the energy system level.

What we offer:

  • A welcoming environment at one of the world’s most renowned research institutions in the field of battery technology
  • Valuable knowledge gain in a growing market
  • Exciting fields of application, ranging from portable devices to heavy-duty traction applications
  • An ideal research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure and strong links to industry
  • Involvement in university teaching and the development of young talent (Bachelor’s/Master’s), for example through supervision of final-year dissertations
  • Opportunity to pursue a PhD (under Prof. Dr Dirk Uwe Sauer)

Ihr Profil

Would you like to work in an academic environment whilst also collaborating with industrial companies? Do you enjoy tackling engineering problems from both a theoretical and practical perspective and seeking solutions independently? Are you interested in pursuing a PhD in the field of battery systems?

  • Interest in lithium-ion batteries and battery systems
  • Initial experience in CAD design using, for example, SolidWorks, Inventor, NX CAE, CATIA
  • Basic experience in a hardware-oriented programming language, e.g. C, VHDL, Python, Matlab
  • A successfully completed Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in a technical or scientific field (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science)
  • Interest in collaborating on exciting projects with partners from industry and academia
  • A high degree of commitment, initiative and independence
  • A team-oriented and well-organised approach to work
  • Excellent command of written and spoken German and English

Ihre Aufgaben

You will actively contribute to projects focused on the investigation and characterization of battery systems in both test bench environments and real-world application scenarios within a container-based testing and storage infrastructure. The main focus lies on the integration, advancement, and application of modern measurement, testing, and monitoring approaches for battery cells and modules.

Within the CARL context, a particular emphasis is placed on the fusion and joint analysis of data from different measurement, testing, and operational sources. The goal is to enable a holistic description of battery states and to derive robust diagnostic and prognostic models during operation.
