The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of two years initially.
It is intended to extend the contract for at least one year, potentially to a total of five years.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.

Unser Profil

At the Institute for Urban and Transport Planning (ISB), an interdisciplinary team teaches and conducts research on the future of cities and mobility. The topics covered by the institute range from urban structures and the organization of mobility and transport to the design of specific components of transport infrastructure. Current key challenges such as climate change, scarcity of resources and social issues are paramount for the ISB’s work. Moreover, the ISB works on technological and organizational innovations such as electric vehicle mobility, automation and the sharing economy, which offer solutions to existing problems, and can inspire new developments. The ISB’s research revolves around integrating this kind of innovation into existing urban or transport structures, thus contributing to solutions for existing challenges. The Institute’s topics include planning of infrastructure and mobility management, as well as projecting the opportunities, risks and impacts of new technologies and services. As for urban and regional planning, a specific focus of the ISB is on strategies for climate protection and climate adaptation at both municipal and regional level as well as on residential choices. The methodology of the ISB’s work is underpinned by comprehensive competences in surveying and analyzing mobility and spatial data, as well as the development and application of simulation models.

Ihr Profil

The position requires

  • a university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in civil or environmental engineering with a specialization in transport planning, transport engineering, spatial planning, geography or related fields
  • Knowledge in the field of urban and transport planning and modelling
  • ideally knowledge and practical experience in the use of statistical software (e.g. R, SPSS, STATA), work with spatial data (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) or similar programming experience
  • the willingness to familiarize yourself with new topics, in particular geodata, statistical modeling, parking research
  • good knowledge and experience in the use of standard PC software (e.g. MS Office)
  • planning and organizational skills, initiative, creativity and flexibility in dealing with complex tasks
  • a high level of willingness to gain your own scientific qualifications
  • strong communication skills and a willingness to collaborate across disciplines
  • the ability to formulate precisely and comprehensibly (verbally and in writing) in German or English
  • good written and spoken German and English language skills or a willingness to learn German

Ihre Aufgaben

We offer you the opportunity to make an important contribution to the scientific foundations of transport by participating in research projects. You will be involved in the further development of the basis for political and planning decisions for a sustainable transportation system. Your research tasks will include surveying and modelling mobility behavior, e.g. to analyze the effects of measures in the field of urban transport planning. A willingness to publish scientifically and to take on teaching duties is a prerequisite.
