Our mission is to advance computational geoscience and technology through research and innovative education.

Our Research Focus

  • Applied geophysics and computational geoscience
  • Characterizing and predicting subsurface states and processes
  • Applications in geothermal energy, subsurface storage, raw materials, and near-surface geophysics

Our Methodologies

  • Geological modeling and geophysical simulations
  • Machine learning and AI for geosciences
  • Agentic AI systems and large language models (LLMs) for geoscientific applications
  • Sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, and inversion methods
  • Development of open-source scientific software

Education and Collaboration

We contribute to the B.Sc./M.Sc. programs "Applied Geosciences" and "Georesource Management" at RWTH Aachen (www.fgeo.rwth-aachen.de) , as well as the prestigious Joint M.Sc. program "Applied Geophysics," offered together with TU Delft and ETH Zurich (www.idealeague.org/geophysics).

Why Join Us?

By joining our team, you will work at the intersection of geological modeling and modern AI, collaborate on impactful research, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the geosciences — nationally and internationally.

Ihr Profil

You have a completed university degree (master's or equivalent) and a PhD in a field related to geological modeling, such as geosciences, (geo-)physics, computer science, simulation sciences, or engineering. You bring strong programming skills — in particular Python — and ideally experience in university teaching. You work independently, have excellent teamwork and communication skills, and are confident expressing yourself in English. Knowledge of German is advantageous but not required. Experience in acquiring and managing third-party funded projects is a strong asset.

Your expertise in geological modeling and 3D geosciences complements our research profile through links to:

  • Geological modeling: Theory and application of implicit and explicit modeling approaches, structural geological interpretation, and uncertainty quantification in geomodels
  • Agentic AI and LLMs: Development and application of AI-driven autonomous workflows for geological modeling; experience with agentic frameworks (e.g., LangChain, AutoGen, MCP protocol) is a strong plus
  • Open-source development: Contribution to existing institute open-source projects (in particular GemPy and GemGIS) as well as independent development and curation of scientific software
  • Database integration: Working with geoscientific databases and data infrastructures and connecting them to automated modeling workflows

Ihre Aufgaben

In this position, you will:

  • Research: Develop your own research profile in agentic geological modeling, acquire and lead research projects, and publish your findings in high-impact journals and at international conferences.
  • Software and project development: Actively contribute to the further development of institute open-source software, and to the design, implementation, and maintenance of software projects at the interface of geological modeling, agentic AI systems, and geoscientific data infrastructures.
  • Contribution to ongoing projects: Participate in existing research collaborations and third-party funded projects of the Chair, including contributions to collaborative national and European research consortia.
  • Supervision: Co-supervise doctoral researchers and master's students in thematically related research areas.
  • Teaching: Participate in our Bachelor's and Master's programs by delivering lectures and exercises (4 semester hours per week) and supervising final theses. Courses may be offered in German or English, depending on your preference.
  • Collaboration and administration: Support the Institute's administration and organization while actively contributing to a collaborative and innovative research environment.

Please send the completed questionnaire on https://rwth-aachen.sciebo.de/s/KhF2nxYuxMpkwyo together with your application documents to job@cg3.rwth-aachen.de.
