Unser Profil
The Mathematical Modeling and Simulation group at the Chair of Applied and Computational Mathematics (ACoM), RWTH Aachen University, pursues research at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Our work focuses on the derivation, analysis, and numerical solution of partial differential equations arising from mathematical models of complex physical processes. A particular emphasis lies on processes involving fluid- and thermodynamics, transport theory, phase transitions and free-surface flows, with applications from rarefied gas dynamics and electronmicroscopy to electric arcs and fusion. Beyond that we are always open for new topics and directions. We design and analyze modern numerical methods tailored to these fields, including finite volume, discontinuous Galerkin, and finite-element schemes as well as particle-based methods. Leveraging theory-based machine learning and AI-powered tools is an increasingly important part of our research, enabling data-driven model reduction and fast prototyping in our projects. Our research spans the pipeline from mathematical modeling and theoretical analysis to the implementation of efficient simulation software. We actively develop open-source scientific computing tools and maintain a strong commitment to reproducible, well-documented, public research code.
RWTH Aachen University is one of Germany's leading and largest technical universities. At RWTH our research group is embedded in a vibrant research environment, with ongoing national and international collaborations across applied mathematics, scientific computing, and engineering applications. We offer team-spirit and an intellectually stimulating and supportive atmosphere for researchers, with ample opportunities to engage in the full breadth of modern computational science and engineering. Ihr Profil
We are looking for excellent, highly motivated applicants who hold a university degree (Master or equivalent) and a doctoral degree in applied mathematics, computer science, or engineering with a strong focus on computational method development and scientific computing. You have a solid background in numerical methods and hands-on experience with the implementation of simulation software in a high-performance programming language. You are interested in the mathematical and engineering questions driving our research and are eager to deepen your expertise in these areas. At the same time, you bring your own scientific perspective and are encouraged to contribute new ideas, open new directions, and shape the group's research agenda. You are interested in the full spectrum from mathematical investigations to practical code development, and you subscribe to the value of well-tested, reproducible, and openly shared research software. You enjoy working in a collaborative, international team and are able to communicate your research clearly in written and spoken English. A track record of scientific publications appropriate to your career stage is expected.
Teaching experience is a plus, as is German language.
Qualified candidates should send their application as a single PDF (containing a CV and research statement) via email to Prof. Dr. Manuel Torrilhon (mt@acom.rwth-aachen.de).
Ihre Aufgaben
As a postdoctoral researcher in our group, you will have the freedom and encouragement to pursue your own scientific interests, initiate collaborations, and help shape the future direction of the group. We see this position as a genuine opportunity to establish yourself as an independent researcher and to build your own scientific profile. You are invited to join the research in one or more of our group's core areas, contributing to both ongoing projects and the development of new directions, and we will provide clear entry points into running projects from the start. You will publish your results in peer-reviewed journals and present your work at national and international conferences. You will also participate actively in the scientific life of the group, including seminars, internal workshops, and collaborative meetings with our partners.
The position comes with moderate teaching load in the form of tutorials and exam organization for our courses in the study program 'Computational Engineering Science (BSc/MSc)'. English teaching language is acceptable.
