Unser Profil

The Institute of Crystallography at RWTH Aachen University focuses on the synthesis, structural characterization, and properties of new materials at the interface between geosciences, materials science, physics, and chemistry. We employ and develop various X-ray and neutron scattering methods to understand structure-property relationships. In a collaborative project we aim at combining multiscale experiments and simulations to predict the behavior of high-burnup spent nuclear fuel (SNF) during extended interim storage. This involves developing high-resolution atomistic models of key SNF phases and evaluating their irradiation and swelling behavior, gas solubility, oxygen potential, and mechanical stability. In our project, you will, among others, perform experimental syntheses and investigations of selected double-perovskite phases (type A2BB’O6) that may occur in systems relevant to the "grey phase."

Ihr Profil

A prerequisite for employment is a completed master degree - M.Sc. (or comparable) in materials science, geosciences, physics, chemistry, or a related field of solid-state science. Knowledge of crystallographic measurement and analysis techniques (diffraction methods, and potentially solid-state spectroscopy) as well as solid-state chemistry or physics is advantageous. A willingness to work in radiation protection areas (controlled areas) is desirable. Excellent teamwork and communication skills, good proficiency in English (spoken and written), and a willingness to travel complement your profile.

Ihre Aufgaben

Your responsibilities include independently conducting the scientific work of the project under the guidance of the principal investigator. You will plan, execute, and evaluate project-related syntheses and characterizations, and publish the results. You will maintain close contact with project staff from the collaborative partners, share your findings, and provide project-related support to the participating partners. Furthermore, you will join regular project meetings, make significant contributions to the biannual status reports, and present project results at national and international conferences. You are expected to use the project results to prepare a doctoral thesis.
