The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled by 3/1/2025 and offered for a fixed term until 30.06.2026.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.


Unser Profil

The Geological Institute of RWTH Aachen University offers basic and advanced teaching in the degree courses “Applied Geosciences”, “Georesource Management” and “Applied Geophysics”, and is involved in basic geoscientific research as well as research on industry-related, application-oriented issues. Current research topics include (process) sedimentology (clastics, evaporites, carbonates), stratigraphy, tectonics and sedimentation and 2D/3D seismic interpretation. Our institute is active in numerous national and international projects and is looking for reinforcement in the areas of teaching and research.


The Einstein Telescope (ET) is the European gravitational wave observatory of the third generation. It is listed as a European priority on the ESFRI roadmap since 2021. E-Plan tests the feasibility of placing the telescope at the border area of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.


Ihr Profil

  • PhD in Geosciences
  • Experience in conducting structural geology and application-oriented geophysical research projects
  • Good communication and organization skills in dealing with industry and academic partners
  • Very good English proficiency
  • Proficiency in German is an advantage, but not essential
  • Knowledge of the regional geology of NW Europe, especially Western Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium is beneficial

Ihre Aufgaben

  • Integration into the Einstein-Telescope project team at the RWTH Aachen and close cooperation with external project partners (e.g. NIKHEF and the Université de Liège)
  • Interpretation and Evaluation of 2D- and 3D- seismic reflection data
  • Collection and assessment of core data and geophysical logs
  • Planning and organization of borehole investigations (geophysical logging, packer tests, stress measurements) and contact to the service companies
  • Study of analogue outcrops
  • Reconstruction of the regional geological Framework
  • Productive publication activity
  • Scientific curiosity, enjoyment of developing new research questions
  • Goal-oriented approach with prioritisation of successful project completion
