The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of 3 years.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a part-time contract position.
The standard weekly hours will be 31,86 hours.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.

The Institute of Highway Engineering (ISAC) at RWTH Aachen University stands for a sustainable and digital transport infrastructure. As a research institution, we therefore focus on the development and use of modern technologies and processes in the area of road infrastructure.

We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join our research team in the SchwarmMessRad project. This innovative project focuses on predicting air pollutants and urban heat islands using crowdsourced data from sensor-equipped bicycles and artificial intelligence (AI). The results of this projects will contribute to better understanding of environmental pollution and heat islands in urban areas and enable to develop practical solutions for climate adaptation.

Ihr Profil

• Completed university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Strong background in analysis of geographical data in urban areas using GIS.
• Familiarity with environmental data analysis, satellite imagery and sensor technologies.
• Hands-on experience in data analytics using machine learning, pattern recognition and spatial statistics.
• Programming skills (e.g. Python, R) and experience with data analysis tools.
• Strong interest in environmental protection and emission control.
• Excellent communication skills in German (CEFR Level C1, C2, or native speaker); flexible and effective use of the English language for communication in private, public, academic, and professional contexts.

Ihre Aufgaben

• Develop geospatial AI models for predicting air quality and urban heat islands based on data collected from mobile sensors.
• Analysis of environmental and climate data for integration into these geospatial models.
• Generate spatial and temporal forecasts on air quality and urban temperature patterns.
• Validation of predicted air quality and heat islands using stationary measurements and satellite images to ensure model accuracy.
• Work within the joint project team to analyse the transferability of these models to rural regions.
• Collaborate with project partners on developing a user-friendly online platform to display prediction results for public use.
• Preparation, documentation and communication of research results in project meetings, project reports, scientific publications and national and international conferences.
