Unser Profil

In times of climate crisis and increasing global tensions, a fundamental transformation of energy systems is necessary to ensure the security, environmental compatibility, and independence of the energy supply. The power grid plays a key role in this transformation by replacing fossil power plants and integrating renewable based generations, additional consumers, from industrial processes to heat pumps and electromobility. The most important prerequisites for safe and efficient operation of modern power system are innovative technologies, but above all the integration of modern ICT into the automation infrastructure to coordinate
millions of decentralized generation plants and consumers. This revolution requires new concepts and approaches that do not come from a traditional research environment.

The goal of the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems (ACS) is to implement a multidisciplinary research approach capable of capturing and leveraging the latest advances in ICT to help solve the most advanced problems in grid dynamics and automation. Join us and create a climate-friendly and secure future energy system together with many national and international partners from industry and research!

Ihre Aufgaben

As a member of our international research team, you will play a vital role in a collaborative project focused on outlining a quantum-based electrical energy system. Working closely with partners from both inside and outside RWTH you will work on difficult research tasks. Your responsibilities will involve investigating the potential and limitations of quantum technologies in the planning and operation of power grids across various exemplary use cases, focusing on aspects as transformation and implementation of common monitoring and automation functions as quantum algorithms, data representation in quantum-based communication, and data conversion between quantum and non-quantum systems.

Your contributions will be instrumental in establishing this emerging research field, as you develop new research projects and educational materials aimed at nurturing a new generation of scientists equipped to tackle the challenges posed by the use of quantum technologies for modern energy grids. Collaborating
with an interdisciplinary team of physicists and engineers, you will thus actively participate in investigating exemplary use cases, contribute to the development of future project proposals, and create teaching materials tailored for students pursuing computer engineering studies.
