Unser Profil

The CG3 Chair at RWTH Aachen University focuses on applied geophysics and simulations in computational geoscience. Our work encompasses fundamental scientific inquiries as well as dynamic projects aimed at understanding and predicting various aspects of subsurface utilization.

Applications are in the fields of:

- Geothermal energy,

- Subsurface storage,

- in the sustainable use of raw materials

- and also in near-surface geophysics.

Methodically we develop

- concepts for geosientific simulation and data integration,

- and combine these with methods from machine learning and artificial intelligence,

- and the quantification of uncertainties.

We are actively involved in the development of open source scientific software. In our petrophysical laboratories we determine hydraulic and thermal rock properties under pressure and at elevated temperatures. With geophysical measurements in the field we cover a wide range of methods for geophysical and geoscientific data integration, modelling and simulation. In teaching, we participate in the B.Sc./M.Sc. programs "Applied Geosciences" and "Georesource Management" at RWTH Aachen University (www.fgeo.rwth-aachen.de) and in the international Joint M.Sc. program "Applied Geophysics", which we offer together with TU Delft and ETH Zurich (www.idealeague.org/geophysics). Ihr Profil

You have a university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in geophysics or in related subjects (geosciences, physics, engineering), as well as an interest in research and applications in the field of nuclear waste disposal. In addition, you will have programming skills in Python as well as experience in the field of machine learning. You work independently and have good teamwork and communication skills, and you can also express yourself correctly and confidently in English.

Ihre Aufgaben

Are you seeking a PhD project at the interface between geoscience, machine learning and applied mathematics – with an application to the highly relevant problem of nuclear waste storage? Then a position in this project might be appealing to you:

Your responsibility will be to develop new strategies to link structural geological models to process simulations. This includes the investigation of suitable geometric representations for geological structures, the mesh generation step, as well as the subsequent simulation of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes. Depending on your own profile and interests, you can focus on specific aspects of this workflow, with support from experts in our own institute, as well as from the partner institutions in this project at GFZ Potsdam and TU Darmstadt. The position is further associated with the International Research training Group “Modern Inverse Problems” at RWTH Aachen und the Oden Institute at UT Austin, Texas, USA. For the position, an extended research stay at UT Austin is included.

We actively support the publication of the results of your scientific work in articles and at conferences. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to develop a teaching portfolio and to contribute to our Bachelor and Master degree programs through assisting in lectures and exercises, as well as overseeing the completion of final theses.
