The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled by 1/1/2025 and offered for a fixed term of one year.
Further employment for two years is planned.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.


Unser Profil

The Department for Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering (IOB) at RWTH Aachen University is a leading research institute focusing on sustainable thermal process technology in material production. Research areas include the optimisation of production, processing, and recycling of iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, and glass and ceramics, organized into five scientific groups.


Current focus areas:


  • De-fossilisation of melting, reheating, and heat treatment processes.
  • Low-pollution and CO2-neutral combustion technologies.
  • Electrification and development of new process technology and plant engineering.
  • Process modelling and simulation.
  • Increasing energy and resource efficiency.
  • Implementation of life cycle assessments.

Together with renowned research institutes and companies from the steel, iron and non-ferrous metal industries as well as mechanical and plant engineering, publicly funded national and international cooperation projects and application-oriented industrial projects are carried out as part of practical research. The focus is particularly on the sustainable use of hydrogen as an energy source.


Ihr Profil

University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in relevant fields with above-average grades, fluent in German and English


Knowledge in iron and steel metallurgy, energy/material balances.


Experience with the conduction of life cycle assessments is desirable.


Independence, commitment, team player, ability to self-motivate for project work and scientific writing.


Ihre Aufgaben

Research: Work on EU and nationally funded projects for the use of hydrogen as an energy source, improvement of the circular economy and the implementation of life cycle assessments for this. Planning, implementation and evaluation of life cycle assessments in thermoprocess technology. Topics include decarbonization, circular economy, use of hydrogen as an energy carrier, influence of process adaptations on energy efficiency and environmental assessment.


Industry Cooperation: Carrying out process analyses, mass and energy balances and life cycle assessments for partners. Analysis of alternative, CO2-neutral heating concepts and their possible applications. Derivation of optimization potentials and strategic issues, development of future-oriented concepts. Expansion and deepening of industry contacts.
