Unser Profil

We are the Chair of High Pressure Gas Dynamics (HGD). Historically, there are two synergistic fields of research at the HGD. In the field of Gas Dynamics, trans- and supersonic gas flow is investigated. In the field of combustion fundamentals, the chemical kinetics and the ignition behavior of novel and sustainable fuels are investigated. The job opening is in the field of combustion fundamentals and aims at developing kinetic models for aiding the design and optimization of rocket fuels and energetic materials. This is achieved through a holistic approach of combined theory and experiments, involving quantum chemical calculations, kinetic modeling, measurements of ignition characteristics in shock tube and rapid compression machine, as well as advanced diagnostics via gas chromatography / mass spectrometry and laser absorption measurements.

Ihr Profil

You have a university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or chemistry. You are committed, responsible, communicative, creative, and a team player. You are highly motivated to work scientifically and to write a dissertation. You have a good command of written and spoken English.

You are interested in computer-aided and experimental work. You have experience in systematic work on complex problems and with the documentation and presentation of challenging content. Ideally, you have experience in the field of combustion chemistry.

Your application consists of a CV, a cover letter and your transcript of records.

Ihre Aufgaben

As a PhD student, you will be responsible for research into nitrogen-containing energetic materials, building on the work of the current project phase. You will carry out basic research to investigate the systematic influence of different nitrogen-containing functional groups on combustion chemistry. You will carry out experiments with a shock tube and rapid compression machine and compare them with chemical models developed by you. The project is funded by the Franco-German Research Institute Saint-Louis (ISL), which is why you will hold regular project meetings online. You will also attend the annual PhD conferences of the ISL in Saint-Louis in person.

You will document and present your research for publications in scientific journals, for presentations at (inter)national conference, and for reports and presentations for project meetings. You will also supervise student theses.
